About the event

Open Space Dance presents ‘sheen.’, a reflection of our past, present and future, featuring a world premiere by international choreographer Keelan Whitmore.  His creation will explore the archetype of ‘The Hero,’ deriving inspiration from ancient mythologies, spiritual traditions and literary histories.  A former artist with Alonzo King LINES Ballet (San Francisco) and Tanz Theater Münster (Germany), Whitmore’s compositions are relentlessly physical, with nods to the plurality of the human experience. His choreographic credits include creations with Joffrey Ballet School, Alonzo King LINES Ballet Training and B.F.A. Programs, Kansas City Ballet, Quixotic Performance Ensemble, Virginia School of the Arts, Sonia Dawkin’s Prism, and Regional Dance America, which presented him with the National Choreographic Recognition Award in 2005. You can read Keelan's full bio here.

Princess Grace Award winner and Artistic Director of Open Space, Franco Nieto, and Charlene Hannibal, Co-Founder and School Director, will be presenting new works on the School at Open Space’s Young Artists Co.  Hannibal’s Noctambulist is set to two Chopin Nocturnes and plays with the idea of “sleep-dancing” and the fractured yet seemingly real interactions we have in our dreams. Nieto has two pieces in the program including sheen., a duet performed by Cardin Chung and Zoe Ridgell, which navigates each individual's confined relationship to the pandemic.  The Young Artists Co. will also premiere Nieto’s latest creation, terremoto waves, which investigates the concepts of an ever-changing environment. Come celebrate with us for our first performance at the Royal Durst Theatre!
